The Twister Medevac pays homage to the pilots and crew of the Medevac helicopters that were used for the first time in 1945 to airlift wounded soldiers from front-line positions to hospitals away from the WWII battlefields.Later, several helicopter types were used as Medevac machines during the Korean war with the distinctive Bell 47/H13 taking the lead role in both real life, film and also in people's imagination. Twin stretchers were fitted atop each landing skid so that a pilot could carry two wounded soldiers to safety. Small plastic bubbles were fitted over the front of the stretchers to protect the wounded from further trauma during flight. The distinctive plastic bubble canopy and 'chop-chop' sound footprint on approach along with the stoic bravery of the pilots who flew them have helped to build the well-deserved admiration that so many around the world still feel for this evocative little aircraft and for the brave airmen who operated them. Literally they were 'Born to Save' and they did!
